چکیده

We have studied the influence of a beta adrenergic blocking agent and an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitor on cerebral blood flow (CBF) during general anaesthesia before surgery. Nine patients served as controls and received no special pretreatment. Two other groups were allocated randomly to receive either metoprolol 0.07 mg kg-1 i.v. (nine patients) at the time of induction or captopril 1 mg kg-1 by mouth (11 patients) 1.5 h before induction. There was no significant difference in CBF or CBF values corrected for changes in PaCO2 (CBF corr.) between the metoprolol group and controls. In the group pretreated with captopril, CBF corr. values were significantly lower compared with the metoprolol group. Low CBF corr. in association with low mean arterial pressure was observed in two patients treated with captopril. These findings suggest that treatment with ACE-inhibitors should be discontinued before anaesthesia.

Cerebral blood flow and metabolism during hypotension induced with sodium nitroprusside.

Cerebral blood flow and metabolism have been studied in 11 patients during general anaesthesia and hypotension induced with sodium nitroprusside in combination with captopril. Cerebral blood flow was measured, using a Novo Cerebrograph model 10A, after injection of 133 xenon into an arm vein. Arterial and venous blood samples were drawn to calculate cerebral metabolism. Captopril 1 mg.kg-1 oral...

Inhibition of nitric oxide synthase activity improves focal cerebral damage induced by cerebral ischemia/reperfusion in normotensive rats

Introduction: Nitric oxide seems to play a dual role in ischemia/reperfusion injury. Few studies have investigated whether it exacerbates or improves brain edema. In the present study, we inhibited the activity of nitric oxide synthase by L-NAME and evaluated the cerebral infarct volume, tissue swelling and brain edema, alongside the measurement of blood flow of the ischemic region. Methods...

Protection against ischemia and improvement of cerebral blood flow in genetically hypertensive rats by chronic pretreatment with an angiotensin II AT1 antagonist.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Pretreatment with angiotensin II AT(1) receptor antagonists protects against cerebral ischemia. We studied whether modulation of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and morphometric changes in brain arteries participated in this protective mechanism. METHODS We pretreated adult spontaneously hypertensive rats with equally antihypertensive doses of candesartan (0.1 or 0.3 mg/kg pe...

Role of Nitric Oxide and ATP-Sensitive K+ Channels in Regulation of Basal Blood Flow and Hypercapnic Vasodilatation of Cerebral Blood Vessels in Rabbit

Background: The mechanisms underlying cerebral hypercapnic vasodilatation are not fully understood. Objective: To investigate the role of nitric oxide (NO) and ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels in basal blood flow regulation and hypercapnia-induced vasodilatation in rabbit cerebral blood vessels. Methods: The change in cerebral blood flow was measured by a laser Doppler flowmeter in 18 Ne...

Role of Local Nerves and Prostaglandins in Regulation of Basal Blood Flow and Hypercapnic Vasodilatation of Cerebral Blood Vessels in the Rabbit

The mechanisms underlying cerebral vasodilatation during hypercapnia are not fully understood. To examine the role of nerves and prostaglandins in the regulation of basal blood flow and in hypercapnia-induced vasodilatation in the cerebral blood vessels of rabbit.Cerebral blood flow was measured by laser Doppler flow-meter in 18 NZW rabbits anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital.  Tetrodetoxin ...
